The word “bespoke” has become one of the most misunderstood words in modern menswear.

Today, bespoke, custom-made and made-to-measure are frequently presented as though they mean the same thing. They do not.

The difference begins with a fundamental question:

Is an existing garment pattern being adjusted to fit the gentleman—or is the garment being created from the gentleman himself?

At Ferruccio Milanesi, bespoke tailoring begins with the second philosophy.

There is no standard size selected first and no pre-existing production pattern that simply becomes the starting point of the suit.

Instead, the master tailor studies the individual gentleman—his measurements, proportions, posture, shoulders, chest, waist, hips, arms and the relationship between different parts of his body.

From this information, an individual pattern is drafted from scratch specifically for that wearer.

BESPOKE IS NOT SIMPLY “CUSTOM”

A suit can be customized without being truly bespoke.

A customer may choose a fabric, lining, buttons, lapel style, pockets and other details and still be purchasing a garment based upon an existing pattern.

Personalization and bespoke construction are therefore not the same thing.

This distinction is particularly important today because terms such as “custom suit,” “made-to-measure” and even “bespoke” are sometimes used very broadly in the marketplace.

For the gentleman investing in fine tailoring, understanding what is happening beneath the surface of the garment is far more important than the terminology printed on the label.

MADE-TO-MEASURE

Made-to-measure generally begins with an existing base pattern or established block.

The customer is measured and the closest appropriate size or pattern is selected. Adjustments are then made to accommodate the customer's measurements and proportions.

Sleeve length may change.

The waist may be taken in.

The jacket length can be modified.

Trouser dimensions can be adjusted.

Shoulder or posture corrections may sometimes be incorporated, depending upon the sophistication of the program.

The result can be an excellent garment and can offer a considerably better fit than conventional ready-to-wear.

But fundamentally, the process usually begins with an existing pattern architecture that is modified for the customer.

CUSTOM-MADE

“Custom-made” is a much broader term.

Depending upon the company, it may describe made-to-measure clothing, personalized ready-to-wear, individually configured garments or, occasionally, genuine bespoke tailoring.

The word alone does not explain the method of construction.

A customer may be offered hundreds of fabrics, dozens of linings, different buttons, lapels, pockets and monograms.

These choices can create a highly personalized suit.

But having many choices does not automatically make a garment bespoke.

The essential question remains:

How was the garment engineered for the individual body?

TRUE BESPOKE BEGINS WITH THE BODY
